When I read or hear the words creative writing images of short stories, insightful essays, and thought provoking poetry instantly pop up in my head. Some of the most interesting creative writing I have seen has been published on my friends' websites. The ability to take a thought, observations, or experiences and transform it into a written medium so that others can feel, experience, understand, and comprehend it is very exciting. Words are powerful, and the ability to use them not just to tell a story but to describe it so a person really feels like they are a part of the world between the words.
In my opinion, art serves to express the emotions of the artist and to evoke a response in the observant. To quote the movie Pecker, which were are watching in our Creative Writing course right now "You see art when there is nothing." Not everyone appreciates Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, and in the same vein not everyone can tell the difference between a Monet and a Picasso. Art is the ultimate expression of a person's personality.
My reasons for taking Creative writing this semester are twofold. First of all, in order to meet my additional English requirement for one of my majors I had to take a writing course. Any of the fine writing courses at NDSU would have applied, but I chose Creative Writing for my own reason. That reason is that I am tired of writing what I have to. I work in science, where most of the writing is in a certain format. The creativity in science is in the experiment, not in the manner of its presentation. I understand the necessity of uniform reporting of scientific experiments, but I often an frustrated while writing. I hope that Creative Writing, in which I have guided projects but in the which the style and tone of the work is my own, will help make me a stronger writer. In addition, I feel the need for arts in our everyday lives. In my bedroom I have a quote by Einstein. It reads "Where the world ceases to be the scene of our personal hopes and wishes, where we face it as free beings, admiring, asking, and observing, there we enter the realm of Art and Science." By refining my ability to describe a world that is only in my imagination, I hope to enhance my understanding and abilities to write for my future career.
